Week 1: Media Autobiography
Growing up in America in the 21st century having a relationship with media is inevitable. I remember some of my first memories were watching movies like, Boys in the Hood and watching music videos on MTV, when they still played music, with my older siblings and cousins. At school I was exposed to children’s books and the basics of elementary, but at home being the baby in the family I was exposed to an unfiltered assortment of media outlets that I think helped pave the way for my future interests – something I am very grateful for. When I say unfiltered assortment of media I am referring to the fact that I was not only limited to G rated movies and nursery rhymes but I was also able to get a “mature,” look at media by watching the news, R rated films and anything else that my older siblings welcomed me to.
When I came an age that I actually had more of a choice on what it was that I viewed and listened to I felt the possibilities were endless and that not one genre of media should ever be discriminated against. This is why if you take a look at my iPod you will see some pretty “random,” stuff on it seeing that I enjoy all music as long as I can feel the beat and if there are lyrics, have a connection with the lyrics. And, when it comes to movies I am not too keen on big budget films, even though I do find myself enjoying a few, but I do enjoy films with a very artistic approach – films that try to break some boundaries. I really enjoy anything that brings awareness and feel good entertainment. Like I said, no discrimination.
I feel my “no limit,” upbringing with media helped me to gain a broader perspective with media and allowed me to gain a huge interest for it. I always knew that I wanted my career to have some involvement with entertainment/media yet had no idea what exactly I wanted to do with it. But, as of recently I have figured out that I want to major in Business Administration with an emphasis on entertainment. UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton both offer programs and UCLA Andersen’s offers a Masters program, so those schools I am keeping in mind as transfer options.
With all that said I hope this class can broaden my knowledge of media and help me to be more media literate!
